Angela completed her Gateway work experience at Auckland Airport as a Guest Experience Host. The skills and knowledge she gained included: learning how to deliver good customer service, assisting guests from many cultures, peer and management interaction, airline and ground operations terminology and knowledge, correct two-way radio operation, and health and safety. Angela gained an extra 20 credits towards her NCEA. After completing the course, Angela was offered full-time employment and will start work in July.
Gateway is a tailored programme for students who have a chosen career path and want to gain the skills and experience needed to further their goals. Structured around work-based learning, Gateway allows students to learn and work while still at school. Full-time students in Years 11 to 13 can apply for Gateway and complete a work placement and Gateway learning plan, which will give them confidence to go out and achieve their goals.
