Course Aims:
The study of Geography at Level Two is divided into two main topics which are referred to as Achievement Objectives; ‘Understand how the processes that shape natural and cultural environments change over time, vary in scale ad from place to place, ad create spatial patterns’ and ‘Understand how people’s perceptions of and interactions with natural and cultural environments differ and have changed over time’.  These Achievement Objectives shape the course of our years study and allow us to explore a more contemporary geography that deals with current topical issues and takes into account the value of people’s perceptions and how these are shaped by a person’s environment.   

Throughout the course of the year we will look at topics that include; Natural landscapes such as the Amazon and Tongariro, Urban settlements such as Auckland and Singapore and Geographic ideas and skills which will incorporate the value of perspectives.  We will also take the opportunity to look at various other current geographical issues that may arise throughout the course of the year and incorporate these into our internal examinations. 

This course will support prior knowledge and ideas through the exploration of geographic processes and concepts while using internal assessment to reinforce the concepts and ideas needed for external examinations.


Key Objectives:
  • To develop and apply skills and techniques used in geographic inquiry and interpretation.
  • For students to develop an understanding of the features of the natural and cultural; environments and their landscapes.
  • For students to foster a continuing interest in and encourage an appreciation of the qualities and the needs of the environment seen always in relation to people’s social and economic needs and values.
  • To enable students to contribute to society through being able to participate in making sound decisions about relationships between people and their natural environment.
  • For students to develop an empathy with people in our own and other societies. 
This level two course is designed to give students the skills and knowledge needed to help them make sense of a complex and changing world and their place in it.                                                                   

Learning Pathways:
Level Three:
Year 12 Geography teaches many of the geographic skills that are needed it Year 13 Geography whilst giving you the time to practice and refine these.

Tertiary Study:
Social Sciences (Anthropology, Geography, History, Travel and Tourism), Education, Hospitality, Photogrammetrist, Urban and Regional Planning, Surveying, G.I.S Analyst, Sciences (Geology, Earth Sciences, Geomorphology, Climatology), Business Analyst, Real Estate.
