9 PE & Health

INTRODUCTION         
           
The learning area of Health and Physical Education is all about promoting total well-being.
It also promotes learning through movement.
It explores the concepts of physical well-being, mental and emotional well-being, social well-being and spiritual well-being.

Our aim is to provide an enriching, challenging and fun filled learning environment in which all students have the opportunity to achieve to their potential.

PARTICIPATION

Health and Physical Education is a core subject for years 9 and 10.
Participation is therefore compulsory.
It may be taken in the form of optional subjects such as Physical Education,
Health Education, Outdoor Education and Sport Leadership in years 11, 12 and 13 as part of the N.C.E.A. qualifications programme.

NON-PARTICIPATION

If a student has a medical condition, illness or injury s/he must provide a note from home to be excused from practical lessons.  This note is accepted at the teacher’s discretion.
If a student is excused from a practical lesson, s/he will be expected to complete written work on a related topic or complete observation sheets.
Students who regularly miss lessons will be required to make up the time completing a written task in their own time.
It is possible to run special programmes for students who have medical conditions or injuries until such time that they are able to continue with the regular programme.

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS

There is no prescribed physical education uniform but students are expected to wear a
T-shirt and plain coloured shorts.  These must be clean, tidy and non-offensive.  It is recommended to have a shirt in your House colour (Blake : black, Day : red, Jellicoe : blue, Massey : green, Perkins : yellow)
During terms 1 and 4 it is recommended that students wear a hat.
Any suitable sports, running or court shoes may be worn throughout the year.
Students will NOT be permitted to participate in any item of their school uniform.

SECURITY


It is unfortunate but valuables and items of clothing do go missing from time to time.
More often than not, the missing item is left behind.
To minimise the problem STUDENTS MUST:               
Give all valuables to their teacher at the beginning of each lesson.
(It is helpful if the student provides an envelope with their name and class written on it, in which the valuables are placed.)
Name ALL clothing (school uniform as well as physical education uniform)
Place all items of uniform (including shoes) in their bag and take their bag to their class activity area.
Inform their teacher immediately they notice something is missing.

Students will take their bag and possessions with them to the lesson venue.
It is recommended that each uniform item is marked with name or initials
sewn into the garment.  Shoes and socks need to be labelled as well.

GYMNASIUM

Do not enter either gymnasium unless you have been given permission to do so.
As soon as you have changed you are to meet in your designated class area.  Your teacher will explain where this will be.
Shoes are to be removed at the gymnasium entrance.  No outside shoes are to be worn on the gymnasium floor or entrance ways.  Be sensible when using the equipment.  Your safety and the safety of others is very important.
No food or drink is to be consumed on the gym floor.  If you use a drink bottle/sipper it must be used or stored off the wooden floor in the gymnasia.
Do not leave your bag and uniform in the changing rooms unless a teacher secures the room.

CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

Our aim is to encourage each student to develop to their full potential in the areas of movement skill and confidence to try new activities.  We expect you to try your best and participate fully in all activities.
Students should realise that not everyone will achieve to a high level for a number of reasons.  You must not make abusive comments towards them or ridicule them.
In competitive activities and games the main emphasis should be on fun and learning.  Students should accept their win or loss modestly and graciously and always congratulate the opposition.
